Polish Women Strike Against Abortion Ban

Women in Poland have gone on strike in protest against proposals for a total ban on abortions.
They marched through the streets wearing black as a sign of mourning for their reproductive rights.
Women who oppose the ban are staying away from work and school and refusing to do domestic chores, in a protest inspired by a women’s strike in Iceland in 1975.
Anti-abortion protests are being held around the country too.

Turkey Gov. Arrest 50 Nigerian Students

It has been reported that about 50 Nigerian students have been detained by the order of the Turkish government.

Majority of the detained students were from Fathi university, a university in Turkey alleged to be a terrorist school . The Fathi University was among the 2099 schools, dormitories and universities shut down in the wake of the July 15 failed coup in the country.

Journalist Shot By ‘IS Sniper’ In Libya

A Netherlands photojournalist has been shot dead by a sniper apparently belonging to the group known as Islamic State (IS) while reporting on the fighting in the Libyan city of Sirte.

Jeroen Oerlemans, 45, was killed while he was out with a team that clears mines.

He was reporting from a part of the city recently freed from IS control.

Hungary PM Claims Referendum Victory

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban has declared victory in a referendum on mandatory EU migrant quotas, despite a low turnout that appeared to render it invalid.

Nearly 98% of those who took part supported the government’s call to reject the EU plan.

But only 43% of the electorate voted, short of the 50% required to be valid.

One of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes in recent years has been moving across the Caribbean towards Jamaica, Haiti and eastern Cuba.

Parts of Jamaica have already been lashed by rain and strong winds, with flood waters blocking roads in the capital, Kingston.

A hurricane warning is in place for Haiti, which is expected to be more seriously affected.

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has instructed his justice and crime prevention ministries to deal with the violence during student protests over tuition fees at universities, a cabinet spokesman said on Thursday.

At least six universities’ classes have been disrupted and some suspended as police and private security companies have tried to quell student dissatisfaction at a fee increase announced by government earlier this month.

Hungary Votes On EU Migrant Plan

People in Hungary are voting in a referendum on accepting mandatory EU quotas for relocating migrants.

Right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban opposes plans to relocate a total of 160,000 migrants across the bloc.

Under the scheme, announced after last year’s migrant crisis, Hungary would receive 1,294 asylum seekers.

Britain’s EU Exit To Begin March - May

Theresa May will formally begin the Brexit process by the end of March 2017, she has told the BBC.

The prime minister confirmed the deadline for triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which sets in place a two-year process of withdrawal.

She has also promised a “Great Repeal Bill” in the next Queen’s Speech, which will overturn the act that took the UK into the EU.
