Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and Thara Uddin, 64, were shot dead as they walked home after afternoon prayers on Saturday in New York. The gunman approached the men from behind and shot both in the head at close range at about 1.50pm local time in the New York borough of Queens.
The men were rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where they later died.
No arrests have yet been made and the motive for the shooting is not immediately known.
No evidence has been uncovered that the men were targeted because of their faith but police are not ruling out the possibility, an NYPD spokeswoman said.
