A prisoner has been left with "severe brain damage" after being allegedly attacked in his cell by fellow inmates.
Ryan Taylor, 30, was left in a three-week coma after prison guards found him unresponsive in Featherstone Prison.
But his family today criticised prison authorities for failing to reveal the circumstances around Ryan's rapid health decline. They believe he was attacked by a group of other prisoners - who even put glue in his mouth - at the Staffordshire jail.Ryan has been left a "vegetable" in hospital "trapped in his own body" and is unable to properly communicate or walk.
Mum Karen Taylor, 52, said she was only informed her son had suffered a heart attack six days after he was taken ill.
Karen said when she asked the jail for CCTV she was told there was none available.
The mum-of-three, who works as a psychiatric nurse, added:
"I was told that he had suffered a heart attack on April 29, but didn't receive the call until May 4.I was told he was found unresponsive in his cell, but nobody has been able to tell me how he came to be that way or how long he had been there for.

"The doctors have told us that he is severely brain damaged."He has been left as a vegetable. He will never walk again and won't be able to do anything for himself."He was no angel, but he doesn't deserve this.
"I had been to see him on the Tuesday prior to this and he was looking really well and had been working out."He went into prison fit and healthy and now he is like this."There are a lot of questions that we want answers to." Ryan, of Stoke-on-Trent, had been 15 months into serving a 55-month sentence at the prison after pleading guilty to burglary, false imprisonment, wounding and affray.
The Prison Service said police were investigating the incident, which resulted in Ryan being found in his cell..
His grand mother said..
He was in for petty crime, nothing too serious. I don't think he had enemies in prison.
"We just want him home. At the moment, it's like he is wasting away before our eyes.
"He can feel pain because he cries but that's about it."I don't think he will be able to speak again.
"He's got no quality of life."
